Henry the Hamster Handler (VR)
"It’s kind of like a mouse maze, if it was designed by Jigsaw from the Saw films... Levels are intricately designed" - UploadVR
For my first shipped title, I worked as the level designer on Henry the Hamster Handler, an indie-VR puzzle game inspired by Lemmings. My role was primarily to design levels, though the nature of the project also allowed me to assist in further aspects of game design and the exploration of VR design, given the game was developed in the early days of commercial VR.
Responsibilities:
-
Created and balanced the 150 levels in the shipped game, developing a design process which included playtesting, 'finding the fun', and iteration.
-
Discovered new design problems the VR nature of the game presented, and explored novel solutions to not compromise the intended experience and provide learnings for future VR experiences.
-
Maintained the vision for the game at the heart of the design to deliver on the intended ethos and player experience.
-
Worked with the developers to find bugs, identify their cause, and suggest solutions, understanding the framework of the game and underlying code systems within Unity.
